Enrichment

Enrichment math classes & clubs for those needing challenge above school level work.

Courses are offered by topic field and there are different strands to pursue.

PROBLEM SOLVING CLASSES

Introduction to Problem Solving (1st – 3rd grade)

50 min/wk

This class offers weekly meetings in which students receive guidance and instruction on self-contained challenge sets. During weekly sessions we teach grade suitable problem solving strategies. Students are expected to complete homework sets and are provided with hints to do so as needed. Particular problem solutions and strategies from the weekly assigned challenge sets are also frequently discussed.

Problem Solving Strategies I (3rd – 5th grade) & Problem Solving Strategies II (5th – 8th grade)

1hr/wk

As the natural continuation to our introductory course, the structure of these classes is similar to our introductory course of the same name. If your student has not attended our introductory course please keep in mind that these classes are geared towards students who work above the average level in the regular classroom but have not had extensive previous problem solving experience. The class provides the necessary structure for students to accomplish the transition into more independent competition level work.

EXPLORING MATH

Fun with Math I (2nd - 4th grade) & Fun with Math II (4th – 5th grade)

1hr/wk

These classes provide a comprehensive and uniquely created curriculum designed to develop students’ critical thinking and analytical skills. In the course of the sessions, students learn to think mathematically and tackle various mathematical challenges. Each weekly session is dedicated to a particular mathematical concept or problem solving strategy and students are given instruction, and guided practice on it. Topics vary by skill level but students are expected to complete weekly assignment in order to master the material taught during sessions.

Elective Special Topic Course (MS, HS or college students only)

1hr/wk

Elective classes or independent study sessions are offered to our advanced learners who have discovered a topic that interests them to pursue in depth. Strong mathematical background and experience is a must for a student considering independent study and students are required to give a presentation of their discoveries once the course of study is complete.

This class can is dedicated to a particular branch of mathematics that is of interest to the particular student or a small group of students. Topics are elective and can be any traditional school topics for extension such as Algebra, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, etc as well as topics not traditionally covered in schools. Past students have taken a medley of other enrichment courses under this course selection such as Number Theory, Probability, Combinatorics as well as Olympiad level Geometry and AMC preparation targets.

If you are interested in this strand, you might want to look into our Math Circles as well.

MATH CIRCLES

  • Does your child enjoy logic games, mind benders and puzzles?
  • Do they like to work on challenging problems?
  • Have they ever tried to solve problems from math competitions or Olympiads?

If you answered “yes” to the above questions, chances are that your offspring will probably be interested in our math circles.

Topics for sessions are chosen to be general and to meet the needs of a diverse group of students and their interests. As a whole, math circle sessions tend to be 1.5-2hour long and very explorative. There is no dry lecturing involved. Students observe, think, make conjectures and build on step by step by thorough group discussion under the directions of a mathematician.

No mandatory homework is required from session to session, but kids are encouraged to pursue any remaining unsolved challenges throughout the week if interested. Most participants often to so without a formal requirement.

At times, in the course of a circle's topic session, students discover a strong interested in a particular branch of mathematics and choose to take it on as an elective independent study.
